About Khanzad

Women’s Community Center “Khanzad” in Sulaimaniya

Khanzad aims to protect women from violence and marginalisation. Providing education and counselling services, it is actively engaged in furthering the social and political participation of women.

In 1996, Khanzad was founded by a group of Kurdish women in cooperation with the organization Haukari in Sulaimania. Being independent of any political party, Khanzad was one of the first centers that provided women with the space and possibility of social exchange and gathering.

Within the first years, Khanzad focused on offering education opportunities and counselling services to approximately 7000 women annually. Hence, women were able to complete elementary school education, take part in literacy classes or profit from medical, social and legal advice. Since the situation of women in Iraqi-Kurdistan has improved significantly, there are several private and state-sponsored education opportunities for women now. However, patriarchal structures continue to dominate society so that it remains difficult for women to live lives independent from men. Especially, women from lower classes and rural areas suffer from forced marriages, violence within families or even FGM. Contesting these norms, women face severe punishments.

Addressing issues of violence against women within family and society publicly, Khanzad together with other women’s groups contributes to improve the protection of women that are threatened from violence from either side.

Apart from counselling services for women, Khanzad is also active in the Prisons of Sulaimania in order to secure basic services and offer legal aid to imprisoned women. Also, they develop life perspectives together with women’s families to fight against social marginalization after they have been released.

Moreover, working with prison and security guards, Khanzad offers training courses to the guards so as to raise awareness for the situation of the imprisoned and secure respectful behaviour towards imprisoned people.
